Direct reconstruction of dynamical dark energy from observational Hubble parameter data
Reconstructing the evolution history of the dark energy equation of state
parameter directly from observational data is highly valuable in
cosmology, since it contains substantial clues in understanding the nature of
the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Many works have focused on
reconstructing using Type Ia supernova data, however, only a few studies
pay attention to Hubble parameter data. In the present work, we explore the
merit of Hubble parameter data and make an attempt to reconstruct from
them through the principle component analysis approach. We find that current
Hubble parameter data perform well in reconstructing ; though, when
compared to supernova data, the data are scant and their quality is worse. Both
CDM and evolving models can be constrained within at
redshifts
and even at redshifts 0.1 z 1 by
using simulated data of observational quality.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Gene selection algorithms for microarray data based on least squares support vector machine
BACKGROUND: In discriminant analysis of microarray data, usually a small number of samples are expressed by a large number of genes. It is not only difficult but also unnecessary to conduct the discriminant analysis with all the genes. Hence, gene selection is usually performed to select important genes. RESULTS: A gene selection method searches for an optimal or near optimal subset of genes with respect to a given evaluation criterion. In this paper, we propose a new evaluation criterion, named the leave-one-out calculation (LOOC, A list of abbreviations appears just above the list of references) measure. A gene selection method, named leave-one-out calculation sequential forward selection (LOOCSFS) algorithm, is then presented by combining the LOOC measure with the sequential forward selection scheme. Further, a novel gene selection algorithm, the gradient-based leave-one-out gene selection (GLGS) algorithm, is also proposed. Both of the gene selection algorithms originate from an efficient and exact calculation of the leave-one-out cross-validation error of the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM). The proposed approaches are applied to two microarray datasets and compared to other well-known gene selection methods using codes available from the second author. CONCLUSION: The proposed gene selection approaches can provide gene subsets leading to more accurate classification results, while their computational complexity is comparable to the existing methods. The GLGS algorithm can also better scale to datasets with a very large number of genes
Simulation of alnico coercivity
Micromagnetic simulations of alnico show substantial deviations from
Stoner-Wohlfarth behavior due to the unique size and spatial distribution of
the rod-like Fe-Co phase formed during spinodal decomposition in an external
magnetic field. The maximum coercivity is limited by single-rod effects,
especially deviations from ellipsoidal shape, and by interactions between the
rods. Both the exchange interaction between connected rods and magnetostatic
interaction between rods are considered, and the results of our calculations
show good agreement with recent experiments. Unlike systems dominated by
magnetocrystalline anisotropy, coercivity in alnico is highly dependent on
size, shape, and geometric distribution of the Fe-Co phase, all factors that
can be tuned with appropriate chemistry and thermal-magnetic annealing
Modeling Eridani and asteroseismic tests of element diffusion
Taking into account the helium and metal diffusion, we explore the possible
evolutionary status and perform seismic analysis of MOST target: the star
Eridani. We adopt the different input parameters to construct the
models by fitting the available observational constraints: e.g., ,
, , . From computation, we obtain the average large spacings of
Eridani about Hz. The age of the diffused models has
been found to be about 1 Gyr, which is younger than one determined previously
by models without diffusion. We found that the effect of pure helium diffusion
on the internal structure of the young low-mass star is slight, but the metal
diffusion influence is obvious. The metal diffusion leads the models to have
much higher temperature in the radiation interior, correspondingly the higher
sound speed in the interior of the model, thereby the larger frequency and
spacings.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ChjA
HCV genotype 6 prevalence, spontaneous clearance and diversity amongst elderly members of the Li ethnic minority in Baisha County, China
The epidemiology of hepatitis C virus varies widely across geographical regions and ethnic groups. Our previous study showed that 6 strains isolated from Baisha County, Hainan Island, China, were all new genotype 6 (gt6) subtypes which differed significantly from subtypes of other regions. In the current study, we conducted a comprehensive epidemiological survey of HCV in the Li ethnic group, native to Baisha County. Anti‐HCV antibodies were detected by 2 independent ELISAs in all participants, and positive results confirmed by the recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) and HCV RNA viral loads were measured. Univariate chi‐square test and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk factors for HCV infection and spontaneous clearance rates. Indeterminate RIBA results were excluded or included in analyses; consequently, findings were expressed as a range. Direct sequencing of partial regions within NS5B and E1 was employed for genotyping. Among 1682 participants, 117 to 153 were anti‐HCV positive (7.0%‐9.1%), with 42.7%‐52.6% confirmed to have cleared infection. Anti‐HCV positivity was associated with older age (≥60 years) (OR = 0.02, 95% CI 0.01‐0.05, P < 0.01) and surgery (OR = 2.75, 95% CI 1.36‐5.57, P < 0.01), with no significant difference found between the HCV infection group and the HCV spontaneous clearance group. The gt6 subtype distribution characteristics of Baisha County were unique, complex and diverse. The sequences did not cluster with known gt6 subtypes but formed 4 Baisha community‐specific groups. HCV infection in members of the Li minority ethnic group is characterized by high prevalence rates in the elderly, high spontaneous clearance rates and broad gt6 diversity
Modeling recursive RNA interference.
An important application of the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway is its use as a small RNA-based regulatory system commonly exploited to suppress expression of target genes to test their function in vivo. In several published experiments, RNAi has been used to inactivate components of the RNAi pathway itself, a procedure termed recursive RNAi in this report. The theoretical basis of recursive RNAi is unclear since the procedure could potentially be self-defeating, and in practice the effectiveness of recursive RNAi in published experiments is highly variable. A mathematical model for recursive RNAi was developed and used to investigate the range of conditions under which the procedure should be effective. The model predicts that the effectiveness of recursive RNAi is strongly dependent on the efficacy of RNAi at knocking down target gene expression. This efficacy is known to vary highly between different cell types, and comparison of the model predictions to published experimental data suggests that variation in RNAi efficacy may be the main cause of discrepancies between published recursive RNAi experiments in different organisms. The model suggests potential ways to optimize the effectiveness of recursive RNAi both for screening of RNAi components as well as for improved temporal control of gene expression in switch off-switch on experiments
Shigella sonnei genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicate recent global dissemination from Europe
Shigella are human-adapted Escherichia coli that have gained the ability to invade the human gut mucosa and cause dysentery1,2, spreading efficiently via low-dose fecal-oral transmission3,4. Historically, S. sonnei has been predominantly responsible for dysentery in developed countries, but is now emerging as a problem in the developing world, apparently replacing the more diverse S. flexneri in areas undergoing economic development and improvements in water quality4-6. Classical approaches have shown S. sonnei is genetically conserved and clonal7. We report here whole-genome sequencing of 132 globally-distributed isolates. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that the current S. sonnei population descends from a common ancestor that existed less than 500 years ago and has diversified into several distinct lineages with unique characteristics. Our analysis suggests the majority of this diversification occurred in Europe, followed by more recent establishment of local pathogen populations in other continents predominantly due to the pandemic spread of a single, rapidly-evolving, multidrug resistant lineage
International Union of Immunological Societies: 2017 Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Committee Report on Inborn Errors of Immunity
Beginning in 1970, a committee was constituted under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) to catalog primary immunodeficiencies. Twenty years later, the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) took the remit of this committee. The current report details the categorization and listing of 354 (as of February 2017) inborn errors of immunity. The growth and increasing complexity of the field have been impressive, encompassing an increasing variety of conditions, and the classification described here will serve as a critical reference for immunologists and researchers worldwide
